  1. Herd size 12 months ago = size at the date of survey − entries + exits. Intakes = purchases + in-donations. Offtakes = sold + out-donated + consumed. Assume mean herd size over the year = (herd size to date + herd size 12 months ago)/2. Intakes are entries without births; offtakes are exits without mortalities and unexplained losses. Thus, intakes and offtakes are deliberate management entry/exit events
